I am a bit worried today since Storm Fay is coming to Florida. People really are getting ready if worst comes. Our emergency supplies are prepared in one corner and from time to time, we have weather forecast on TV. Hurricanes are rated from weakest to strongest on a scale of 1 to 5. Wind speed is the determining factor in this case. To estimate the property damage and coastal flooding during landfall, the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale is used. So, here it goes:
Category 1 winds: 74-95 mph
storm surge: 3-5 feet
damage category: minimal
Category 2 winds:96-110 mph
storm surge: 6-8 feet
damage category: moderate
Category 3 winds: 111-130 mph
storm surge: 9-12 feet
damage category: extensive
Category 4 winds: 131-155 mph
storm surge: 13-18 feet
damage category: extreme
Category 5 winds: 156 mph or more
storm surge: more than 18 feet
damage category: catastrophic
So, knowing the force of those categories really frightens me. But, prayer is my weapon and somehow it calms me.
