Cryo Cell Breakthrough

Cryo-Cell International, Inc. announced positive results of a new study during the Annual Meeting of International Society Of Cellular Therapy (ISCT) which was held at San Diego, California. It was found out that adding menstrual blood stem cells to stem cells from umbilical cord blood expands the amount of progenitor cells. These are the cells that grow into mature blood cells. The expansion techniques could broaden the therapeutic use of the cells and provide available supply of stem cells for transplantation. Studies were performed by using harvested cells from menstrual blood and cord blood cells collected after childbirth and processed to reduce the number of red blood cells. The culture results demonstrated that the cord blood stem cells increase in the functional capacity with the addition of MenSCs or Menstrual Blood Stem Cells. According to the CryoCell Press Release, stem cells found in cord blood have been proven to treat more than 70 life-threatening diseases including leukemia, neuroblastoma, lymphoma and sickle cell anemia. Cord blood stem cells have been used in more than 10,000 transplants worldwide since the first successful transplant in 1998. A single cord blood collection yields only enough stem cells and that is why a research now focused on identifying ways to expand or enhance cord blood stem cells.
